Saplings, Bishops Court Glen

“Saplings, Bishops Court Glen”

Monotype 1/1. Image Size 400x400mm.

The light seems to slide around the saplings as they rise slender limbed to whip like branches. These tipped with half furled illuminated leaves, give a faery dance of light to the wild garlic bedecked glade. A compelling contrast to the ivy clad evergreen trunks, drinking the light in with an exact measure of their mighty trunks.

Rock Pool 2

“Rock Pool 2”

Monotype 1/1. Image size 400x400mm

The weight of the black rock blended with the silvery lightness of the smoother rock is a wonderful counterpoise. It has the underpinning design of an apposite “yin-yang” composition. This integrated complexity is the fractal quality inherent in the universe and it is this quality that has risen to the surface as the subject in this work of an almost abstracted nature.

Crashing Waves, Seascape

“Crashing Waves, Seascape”

Monotype 1/1. Image size 400x400mm.

Swathed in sun-kissed crashing waves the cliffs and craggy rocks below, a delightful stormy bright day. Though tousled sheeps wool is caught fast to briar still, this is a good day to blow the cobwebs away.

This view is from the coast between Port Grenaugh and Santon Gorge on the Island. Many of the Seascapes I have made into monotypes so far are from this beautiful stretch of coastline.

“Rock Pool 1”

Fertility and awesome rite of passage to this world leaps to meet the eye in this visceral work. The body of rock baring the scars and patina of birth. Belly cupping the waters of life brimming with potentiality. A birthing pool replenished by sun on the sea. The Moon, tidal midwife in attendance.

“Port Cornaa, Seascape”

Monotype 1/1. Image size 400x400mm

The precise line of the distant horizon accumulates clouds.Waves tumble toward the foreshore of the beach at Port Cornaa. Their steady swell backed march foiled only by a line of black rocks, the reaching arms of which are hugging a wave to spray.

Path Toward the Light

“Path Toward the Light, Bishops Court Glen”

Monotype 1/1. Image size 400x400mm

A grassy carpet picked out with tiny points of flickering light. A lattice mesh of saplings and the canopy of leaves makes for a shady passage. The sparkling tear drop brought into focus by the cool dark tunnel is foreshadowed by the fallen tree trunk, marking the way into open sunshine.

Incoming Tide, Rock Pool 3

“Incoming Tide, Rock Pool 3”

Monotype 1/1. Image size 400x400mm.

A cleft between split boulder and sea smoothed bedrock admits the action of a gentle influx of tidal waters. The shadows allow the scene to be, protected from being exposed to the full force of the blistering light beyond.

Flooded Lane, East Baldwin 2

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

“Flooded Lane, East Baldwin 2”

Monotype 1/1. Image size 400x400mm

The same subject and a similar scene to the last post, but with a very different feel. The framing effect of the hedges leads via the central “path” of clear, sky reflected water to the open perspective of the sunlit fields beyond. This composition has a much more pastoral effect.

Flooded Lane, East Baldwin 1

“Flooded Lane, East Baldwin 1”

Monotype 1/1. Image size 400×400.

A heavy rain fall has flooded the lane leaving navigation limited to sparse islands of tussocky grass and just a few inches of cambered mud beside the hedges. The strongly lit tree trunks and their reflections are framed by the surrounding foliage. This tousled by the recent downpour is yet softened by the sunlight, creating a halo-like effect, a portal to other realms. After all I am told by the locals the land known as “Egypt” lies just beyond the next hill.

Curragh, Ballaugh

“Curragh, Ballaugh Curragh”

Monotype 1/1. Image size 400x400mm

You can feel the modern world sloth away upon entering Ballaugh Curraghs wetlands. Here the softly ruffled reflections have a fascination, a casting of the sky against the depths. This then, as if not enough combines with the shallow perspectives to evoke a truly magical, primordial atmosphere.
